A Little History
Blacks Harbour, incorporated as a village in 1972, has a long history in the fishing industry. Back in 1885, a seafood and berry cannery was begun here by Lewis Connors, employing numerous workers. The industry was such that Connors even built company houses for employees, along with a farm to provide produce, beef, and milk for the workers and their families. Saint John, New Brunswick, and Eastport, Maine, were important early trading partners, which purchased Blacks Harbour fish, and in return, provided this community with a source of other goods. Now, the Connors Brothers Ltd. packing plant is the largest sardine factory in the world, and processes many types of other seafood, as well! |
